A live-action stage musical based on the iconic Aussie kids’ show Round The Twist will make its theatrical debut next year.

Round the Twist the Musical, based on the television show produced by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation from the short stories of Paul Jennings, will premiere in Brisbane in November 2024.

The musical is being staged by Queensland Theatre, in partnership with QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre).

Round The Twist is an iconic children’s show, remembered fondly by children of the nineties for its irreverent humour and grotesque plotlines. It has aired in over 150 countries over 30 years.

Writer and composer Paul Hodge said: “I am one of a generation of kids around the world who grew up watching and loving Round the Twist. Music has always been a core part of the series. The mystery behind the eerie music playing in the lighthouse underpins the show’s first season and the show’s iconic, unforgettable theme song, written by the amazing Andrew Duffield, plays a key part in the musical adaptation. I’m thrilled that the generation that grew up watching the show will be able to introduce a whole new generation of kids to the story – it will be a true family event.”

Queensland Theatre Artistic Director Lee Lewis said: “It has been a labour of love for all of us here at Queensland Theatre for years now, and we’re beyond excited to finally see this production come to life. I think they’ve made something quite extraordinary for the whole country, if not the whole world – we’ve got people from England trying to book.”

The show is being directed by Simon Phillips, award winning director of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, Priscilla Queen of The Desert The Musical and many more plays, musicals and operas.

We think re-imagining the show as a musical is a fantastic way to recreate the magic, and in the hands of Paul Hodge, Simon Phillips and Queensland Theatre, we know that audiences are in for something incredibly special. We can’t wait!”
