This week, the ACTF team embarked on a guided tour through ACMI’s new centrepiece exhibition, The Story of the Moving Image.

After a year of remote working, ACTF HQ was buzzing this week ahead of the first team outing of the year. Enjoying the open air, staff walked from Fitzroy to Fed Square to meet our guide, Sarah, at the steps of the museum’s entryway.

We were each given a ‘Lens’ - a free handheld, take-home device that lets visitors collect the artworks and objects they discover in the exhibition. Sarah explained what is collected on the Lens will be curated into an online collection, and that we can delve deeper into the stories and ideas behind our favourite parts of the museum and discover new films, TV shows, videogames, and art to watch, play and experience - long after we have left the museum.

The Story of the Moving Image exhibition is a journey through the past, present and future of the moving image through interactive experiences, digital innovation, and captivating stories.

ACTF staff enjoyed the curation, presentation, and interactivity in the new exhibition. It was particularly exciting to create our own soundscapes for Li’l Elvis Jones and the Truckstoppers and Round the Twist in ACMI’s Foley Room, spot information about Little J and Big Cuz’s set design and catch EC from Lift Off! on one of many retro TV sets around the museum.

Our favourite exhibits also included the Edit Line: where visitors can rearrange blocks to create sentences clipped from famous film and TV shows; loungerooms on a miniature scale; dancing for the Shadow Play exhibit and seeing home movies projected in the palms of our hands in the Memory Garden.

ACMI: The Story of the Moving Image is open Mondays and Tuesdays 12-5PM, Wednesday to Friday 12-7PM, Saturdays 11AM-7PM and Sundays 11AM-6PM. If you’re in Melbourne, it’s well worth a visit!
