Contemporary resources for personal development programs

Summer’s Day is a warm coming-of-age story which follows one girl’s awkward transition into adolescence.

Summer is 11-years old when she gets her period for the first time. Without a mother to guide her, she navigates becoming a woman, and her body image troubles, with the help of her best friend Mackenzie.

The free Summer’s Day Teaching Toolkit supports Years 5-8 teachers and students in exploring content and themes in the film, including menstruation, puberty and body image. It can be used as a standalone resource, or to complement a school’s personal development program. Mapped to the Australian Curriculum, the 10 learning tasks in this resource address content from a range of learning areas and general capabilities:

  • Critical and Creative Thinking
  • English
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Intercultural Capability
  • Media Arts

With a running time of 22-minutes, the short film is currently available to stream on ABC iview. Teachers can also download the film to own from the ACTF Shop.
